Opera on Wheels II - Central-Transylvania, Banat and Partium

Opera on Wheels II - Central-Transylvania, Banat and Partium

Every Hungarian has both the need and the right to feel that they belong to a nation. This is especially important for those who must preserve their national identity in different country and cultural environ ment as a result of a historical events. The aim of this project is to present open-air performances in every region of the neighbouring countries primarily for the Hungarian communities living there, but also, since art is for everyone, with members of the local ethnic majority population welcome as well. The First Carpathian Homeland Tour of 2017/18 provided a special opportunity for both the audiences – totalling 30,000 in number – and the members of the Opera’s company. We travelled around seven neighbouring countries and it meant a great deal to us too to perform before our fellow Hungarians in remote sports halls. We will be continuing this endeavour with our Opera on Wheels programme: our special lorry that can be converted into a stage can drive to the main square of any small community, and we can please the audience seated around us with our brand-new Italian opera production sung in Hungarian – now in the open air and free of  charge! To follow the first phase in the Székely Land last autumn, it is now time to visit the other areas with a  Hungarian population across the Romanian border.
